There are some very high quality sewing machines on the market today, namely Baby Lock and certain Janome machines. Unfortunately, most sewing machines are of VERY LOW quality. Many of the "name brands" have been sold and are of a MUCH LOWER quality than before. Before purchasing a machine, check with us. We are one of the only sewing stores in the COUNTRY that has carried virtually every brand of sewing machine. Our technicians are factory-trained in virtually all of the brands, so we can provide an accurate assessment of brand quailty. If we no longer carry a brand, there is a very specific reason why.
The sewing industry makes three lines of machines.
LINE #1: HIGH QUALITY - These machines are the best the industry has to offer. They offer the best stitch quality, best service record, and can sew a variety of thickness easily, including multiple layers of denim with little or no tension adjustments. You will have virtually stress-free sewing along with YEARS of excellent service from machines in this category.
WHERE TO FIND THEM: Machines in this category are sold ONLY in independent sewing stores like ours.
LINE #2: AVERAGE QUALITY - These machines are middle of the road. They're not outstanding, but they're not "bottom of the barrel" either. They will get you by, but will have trouble on very thin and very thick material. They may skip some stitches and break thread every so often. They also require some tension adjustments.
WHERE TO FIND THEM: Machines in this category can be found in select department stores.
LINE #3: LOW QUALITY - These machines are the worst the industry has to offer. They have trouble making good quality stitches, even when the user is doing everything right. They can't go through thick material well and break thread often. They tend to skip stitches, bunch up underneath which jams the machine, and require constant tension adjustments.
WHERE TO FIND THEM: Machines in this category can be found at the largest of the big box discounters, buyer's clubs, TV shopping networks, and through on-line retailers.
