Serger and overlock are interchangable terms.  Sergers will perform three tasks at one time.  They will join your material, overcast the edge, and trim off the excess.  Sergers make your sewing faster and easier.  They won't replace your sewing machine, but are a good addition to it.  Think of your sewing machine as an oven and your serger as a microwave.  The microwave is fast, but won't replace your oven.
